Carole Whittingham

Carole Whittingham

MBE Founder of SCARD

Carole founded SCARD with her husband Francis after the death of their 27-year-old son. Steven Whittingham was killed by a car thief who was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Carole and Francis witnessed first-hand the lack of support for people bereaved, injured or affected by road death and injury.

Carole was awarded with an MBE in 2011 for her services to SCARD.

Our counsellors

Steve

Steve

Steve is a volunteer counsellor for SCARD. He was motivated by his own life experiences to support SCARD and understands how the death of a loved one after a road traffic incident can feel emotionally overwhelming and mentally devastating.

As a BACP registered counsellor, Steve offers support and guidance to those grieving, accompanying them through the emotional turmoil of their grief until they feel he is no longer required.

Amanda

Amanda

Amanda is a BACP registered counsellor and volunteers for SCARD, she offers support and guidance to those grieving or needing support following a road traffic collision.

Amanda found SCARD online and spoke with two of the trustees about becoming a volunteer counsellor. She felt very welcomed and particularly likes the warmth and “family feel” about SCARD.

Helpline volunteers

Our helpline volunteers are integral and highly regarded members of the SCARD team.
They help maintain our phone lines 365 days per year, from 9am until 9pm.

Johanna

Johanna

Johanna is one of our helpline volunteers. She says: “By listening to someone who needs it, we help more than we imagine.”

Maria

Maria

Marie volunteers for SCARD to contribute to the community and to support a local, incredibly worthwhile charity. She uses her skills as a good listener to support those in distress.

Kira

Kira

Kira chose to volunteer for SCARD’s helpline because she understands what it is like to feel as though you have nowhere to turn. Having lost someone herself, Kira appreciates the distress people could be feeling when they call. Having been born into SCARD through family ties, Kira was bound to become a volunteer!

Susan

Susan

Susan has been a volunteer for SCARD’s helpline for two years. She comes from a unique place of understanding of what it is like to lose someone suddenly and tragically: SCARD helped Susan when she lost her 24-year-old son Joshua in a road accident. Her compassion and empathy is genuine – she is so happy to support the helpline.

Carol

Carol

Carol’s 18-year-old son was killed by a drunk driver many years ago. She was on her own and desperately needed someone to talk to... but there was no-one. When Carol retired in 2005, she was in a position to offer help and hoped her personal experience would be useful to others in similarly sad circumstances. She contacted SCARD’s founder Carole Whittingham, who was delighted to give her a trial. Carol has dealt with many calls over the last 15 years and sincerely hopes to have been of help to those she has spoken to.

Mark

Mark

Mark works full time but gives his free time to support SCARD’s helpline. He feels it is important to have time for others who may need help, support or just someone to listen when they are in crisis. Giving a little back to help others is important to Mark.

Event volunteers

Our event volunteers help raise vital funds to enable SCARD to continue providing support and care to those affected by road traffic collisions.

Nadine

Nadine

For Nadine, volunteering for SCARD is a joy and an honour. Without SCARD, Nadine’s sister would not have been able to access the help and support she needed when she lost her teenage daughter in a road traffic collision.

Mike

Mike

Mike became involved with SCARD after meeting trustee Anne Field and assisting with money raising events. He finds it reassuring to meet some of the people helped by SCARD during the events.

Sarah

Sarah

Sarah volunteers at local events after SCARD helped her and her mum when her sister was killed in a road traffic collision.

Isaac

Isaac

Isaac is 9 years old. He started helping his nana at various fundraising events as he knows SCARD helped her at a sad time.

SUPPORT SCARD

Help us to help others like you

We receive no funding and rely completely on the generosity of public donations. There 3,000+ people killed on the roads of the UK every year, and over 30,000 seriously injured. The bereaved and those who have been injured would greatly value your support in helping us to help them.
